Northern Billboard People's Choice Awards
Award rules & eligibility
Nominations are grounded in verifiable chart performance and reviewed by the editorial team. These criteria apply to the four People's Choice categories.
General eligibility
- Eligibility window
- 52 consecutive chart editions make up the tracking year. November 1 to October 31 is an example of a yearly window, not an announced date for the current edition.
- Regional & cultural connection
- The artist, producer or primary creative must originate from or actively operate within Northern Nigeria, or the project must prominently feature Northern linguistic or cultural identity: Hausa pop, Nanaye, Arewa drill, Fulani folk-fusion, Northern gospel and related forms.
- Official release
- Commercially released on recognised platforms such as YouTube, Audiomack, Boomplay, Spotify or Apple Music, with a traceable ISRC, catalogue ID or official music video link.
Category 01
Best Song of the Year
Celebrates the single track that dominated the Northern cultural and commercial space.
- Nomination threshold
- The Top 10 highest point-scoring tracks on the Northern Billboard Top 50 across the tracking year automatically seed the nominations. A track must have spent at least 6 consecutive weeks on the weekly Top 50.
- Tie-breakers

- Recipients
- The recording artist(s) and credited music producer(s).
Category 02
Best Artist of the Year
Recognises the artist who dictated the sound and commercial trajectory of the region.
- Nomination threshold

- Annual performance
- Evaluated on aggregate annual artist points: the combined total of all charting entries where the artist is credited as the primary or lead featured act.
- Cadence & impact
- Sustained engagement through live performances, official video rollouts or regional cultural influence.
- Recipient
- The artist or musical group.

- First-time charting
- The artist must score their first-ever Top 20 entry during the current eligibility period.
- Prior disqualification
- An artist with a Top 10 single or a major regional music award in a previous tracking cycle is ineligible.
- Catalogue limit
- No more than one commercially recognised studio album released before the start of the eligibility year.
- Focus metrics
- Net velocity of social virality, including TikTok creations, and rapid stream growth over a short span.
- Recipient
- The solo artist or duo.
Category 04
Best Album / EP of the Year
Honours cohesive bodies of work, sonic packaging and comprehensive streaming performance.
- Track count & length
- A full album must contain at least 7 original tracks and run for at least 25 minutes. An EP contains 3 to 6 original tracks.

- At least two songs from the project must have charted individually on the Top 50, or the body of work must have verifiable cumulative stream volumes across Audiomack, Boomplay and YouTube.
